COTANCE writes on LinkedIn: With the entry into force of the EUDR began the countdown to achieving full traceability of bovine leather back to the animal’s birth farm.
The postponement of the entry into application of the regulation has given extra time for the trade & industry to assume the new paradigm. The EU has given the leather industry a clear challenge. EUDR non-compliance will result in exclusion from the EU market, leaving the industry with no choice but to collaborate & innovate or become history.
Traceability of skins and hides constitutes a particular challenge for the leather industry, as they obtain their identity separate from the animal at the slaughterhouse, and information on the previous lifecycle is lost in the vast majority of cases around the globe.
As the representative body of the European Leather Industry, chairing the European standardisation body CEN TC 289, COTANCE, felt the responsibility to withstand this challenge and make it an opportunity for the whole sector.
This is how the Leather Traceability Cluster initiative was born in 2022, setting the stage for cooperation in the leather industry. The initiative, which now accounts for 20+ signatories from all over the world, represents all the relevant stakeholders and experts regarding traceability in the leather industry.
