Leather Naturally writes on LinkedIn: What a brilliant initiative this is! The Surplus Leather Project from The Leathersellers working to support a thriving and connected UK leather industry.
Supported by their wholesale partner, Abbey England Ltd., the Surplus Leather Project works with tanneries to donate leather to education partners across the UK, giving students the opportunity to work with the material and develop skills.
Nicholas Tusting, Chairman of the Leathersellers said: “We’re proud to be working closely with Abbey England to deliver the Surplus Leather Project, which we are now expanding following a successful pilot phase where surplus material was donated by three tannery partners and re-packaged to provide a range of leathers to six higher education partners across the UK.
Its success has meant the Leathersellers’ Foundation has committed additional funding over the course of the next year. This will enable more education partners to offer design and making students the opportunity to learn skills associated with leathercraft, and to discover more about leather as a sustainable and versatile material.”
Also supported by tannery partners Scottish Leather Group; Charles F Stead & Co Ltd; Waltham Tannery; Sedgwick; and GH Leathers. And education partners Birmingham City University; Central Saint Martins University of The Arts London; De Montfort University; London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London; Royal College of Art; University of Northampton; and the University of South Wales.
