Custom Automotive - US client asks Rolls-Royce to shoot for the moon

The bespoke team at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has found a way to imitate a lunar halo in the leather in one of the company’s cars. By Leatherbiz.

To meet the specifications of a recent order from “a significant client” from the US, Rolls-Royce recently created a one-off version of its Spectre electric coupé. The customer’s inspiration was a lunar halo, in which light refracts through ice particles in cirrus clouds to create an ethereal technicolour ring around the moon.

For the exterior of the car, Rolls-Royce used a bespoke holographic paint that captures this phenomenon by applying seven layers of lacquer. These include a specially formulated pearlescent coat, infused with fine flakes of magnesium fluoride and aluminum.

This creates a deep metallic effect under low light that “bursts into rainbow technicolour in bright sunshine”, the automotive company said. It spent a year developing this paint, and will reserve it exclusively for this customer.

To complement the coachwork, the company’s Bespoke team used navy blue, white and peony pink tones in the seats and doors of the interior. It used the same tones in the ‘Starlight Headliner’, the name Rolls-Royce gives to the ceiling in the rear passenger compartment, which uses fibre optics to represent the night sky.

This theme is also visible in the dual-tone steering wheel, which has a navy blue outer and an arctic white inner side.

It has given the name Spectre Lunaflair to the resulting car. Only one will ever be produced, Rolls-Royce said.
