France - Stricter Environmental and Sustainability Claims to be enforced

Apparel Insider writes: France has officially submitted its Environmental Labelling Decree for Textile Products to the European Commission. If approved, brands selling fashion products in France will need to disclose environmental impact scores.

The regulation will require brands to display verified impact data at the point of purchase, with scores – in theory – reflecting the full lifecycle of each product.

A public database will be created to store and verify information, making it easier to compare sustainability claims.

The decree aligns with the EU’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology but goes further by factoring in durability, recyclability, and microplastic pollution.

Enforcement is set to begin in 2026, with financial penalties for non-compliance.
