The deception has gone on too long, damaging and defaming our entire industry, while leaving confused automotive consumers discovering their “leather seats” are actually plastic!
The State of New York, an aggressive pro-consumer protection state, is working hard to pass a first of its kind Automotive Transparency bill that will force automakers to clearly label their interiors as “Fabric, Leather or Plastic” in every vehicle sold within the state.
Bravo to the International Council of Tanners and Germany’s VDL for recognizing the importance of this legislation and providing funding for the effort. See the World Leather & Leatherbiz & APLF articles for interesting commentary on how and why the EU organizations feel this U.S.-based project is so vitally important.
It is efforts like these that will force the hand of change in our industry and help consumers understand what it is they are actually buying – eliminating the constant questioning and immense amount of false information they are fed during the sales process.
Let’s hope the legislators in New York get this legislation passed – because like the song says, “if it can make it there, it can make it anywhere!”
