Forests are chopped down to make automotive leather?
It is Fiction. There is significant legislation already in place, and with the recent introduction of the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in June 2023, to ensure that hides, a by-product of the meat industry, being used to make automotive leather, are not sourced from any area where forests have been destroyed.
Furthermore, leather industry certification schemes such as Leather Working Group (LWG), Sustainable Leather Foundation (SLF), Italian Certification Institute for Leather (ICEC), Ecotex and others have stringent sections with regards to hide sourcing and no risk of deforestation, which tanneries must comply with in order to pass.
Increasingly, automotive OEMs are either joining or requiring these certifications from their suppliers to ensure we look after our environment and protect the world’s natural resources.
