Leatherbiz Market Intelligence: Tensions build in raw material discussions

Cosco Logistics

The latest edition of Leatherbiz Market Intelligence went live on October 22 and is available in the Intelligence section of the website. By Leatherbiz.

Main talking points this time are the different reactions on the buyer and seller sides of the raw material dialogue.

One of the few sources of relief for tanners in the current environment are the stable, low prices of hides. This has led to a narrowing of the price-gaps between different types of hide. The leather manufacturing sector is taking advantage of this situation, the report says, “to purchase its reduced requirements more selectively”.

On the other side of the equation, Market Intelligence says some momentum is now building behind hide suppliers who would like to push raw material prices higher. But it warns that, with finished leather prices under pressure, such a move could even lead to “the demise of some leather manufacturing facilities”.
